It's funny how some myths never die, whether you are refering to biking or basket weaving. People are just plain ignorant. I've been reading a few motorcycle books since I took a MSF and my license. I highly recommend "Proficient Motorcycling, The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well" by David Hough. It more than a safety manual with your typical diagrams. He really dives into the nitty gritty and makes you think about how you choose to ride and react to different scenarios. I can see myself refer back to this over and over again. Even veteran motorist would likely find this a good refresher at the beginning of each riding season.

I've read and own copies of all of David Hough's books and I can't agree with you more. At the very least the knowledge I have gained form reading his books and practicing in parking lots has for sure stopped me me from dropping the bike several times and who knows he may even have saved my life. Great stuff and highly recommended by me at every opportunity.
