Canvas bags?

Anyone ever use canvas saddle bags? I'm looking at these..

Three questions:

1- Are my text books gonna get soaked in the rain? I mean they say water resistant not water proof..
2- Is 13 inches to much for a GZ with no back seat? I measured but I'm iffy.
3- How the heck did Sarris mount his without the back seat? I read some post a million times and studied those pictures but i just didn't get it. I was thinking about fabricating like two pieces of long metal and running them from the two bolts where the back seat attaches to the middle bolt on the back of the fender and running the saddle bags through that to keep them in place.

Installing the bag supports on mine created a space between the chrome trim (covering the fender support rail) and the fender. I unlaced the Suzuki OEM throw over bags from each other. I then trimmed the resultant "tongue" to fit the width between the fender mounting bolts. After trimming, insert the tongue in the space and pull out from below. In effect, you are using the fender support rail to support each bag independently. Then I wire tied the tongue and the bag the bracket, making the bracket sandwich between the two pieces of fake leather.

So more or less the saddle bags are attached to the chrome strip on the rear fender? So you attach the supports underneath that chrome strip it makes a space.. alright i gotcha. Unfortunatly I dont think that will work with the bags I want. And the suzuki bags aren't big enough for my books.
