Well now that winter has struck I am looking for a new option for my exhaust. I'm not a fan of the stock bulky one. Does anyone know of something shorter or straight pipes.

I made a custom pipe for mine and it's pretty badass,straight pipe turns almost vertical at back axle. Stock header to one and half inch pipe, almost painful but they will hear me 45 seconds before they see me...I can't help with chrome but I would say you are better making one than paying for it. Ever consider a cherrybomb? Low rumble but not obnoxious. Could do a drag pipe or custom 1-2 split using couplings instead of welding.

If you make it out of steel, you probably won't be able to get it chromed. I was watching "auction hunters" type programme. The guy found a load of bike parts, and took them to a bike restorer. The pipe was flat black, but the restorer said that there wasn't a chromer in America who would touch exhausts.

It dont need to be chrome. I do not know or have the tools to weld

Take it from some one with hearing damage. Loud pipes may seem cool till you loose some hearing. Yeah it happens to everyone.
I had loud pipes on cages years ago and thought it was neat. Not so neat now though. Loud bikes will also annoy the hell out of your neighbors too.

Two years ago I got both my arms broken ripped all the muscle up right leg and almost lost left nut because a woman in a Lexus didn't look left before she pulled across a main road...i can take a hit to my hearing to help insure it dosnt happen again.

At least wear ear plugs to minimize hearing loss. I had to wear plugs while riding because my ears were very sensitive to certain sounds after a while. Hearing loss is preventable but not repairable.

That does sound awful. How old are you now?? You just may live longer than expected like I did. Passed my statistical due date 15 years ago.

A small glass pack may work beautifully. Not expensive either. Ear plugs are even cheaper by the dozen.

I have always liked the low thump of the thrush glass pack at autozone,only maybe 26 bucks.
that's why statistics suck, when I was early teen I was pretty messed up on dope and mad as a hatter, people were sure I wouldn't see 18. 22 now and kicked dope so now I guess I'm just a angry cynic. Life does have it's redeeming qualitys but for the most part there is enough suffering to go around and little hope to run with. The reason I love spinning wrench is because it is concrete and logic based,a great escape.

I plan on installing a fishtail pipe on it. I didn't like the look and sound of the factory muffler either. so I already change the sound now I want to change the look.

I took the whole exhaust off and cut a 2 inch by 3 inch square whole in the bottom of it at the back. now it bounces the sound off the ground. you don't see the hole unless you get underneath the exhaust. I was trying it out, if it didn't turn out the way I wanted I was gonna get another pipe anyway. it is not too loud. I got the fishtail pipe in yesterday and gonna put it on when it warms up, too cold to work on it right now.

I'm not a big fan of loud things in general, but the fishtail looks kinda cool and it doesn't seem too terribly obnoxious on the noise front.

thanks. I have not been too far down the road with it yet to see if it is going to bother me on a long trip. I do have a baffle I can put in it if it does bother me.

I took the gz250 for a 35 mile ride yesterday and it did great. nice sound from the fishtail pipe. suppose to get some rarely seen snow in my area tonight. thanks for the comments everyone. please leave more opinions.

this fishtail pipe was 30 inches long. I had to cut a few inches off and cut the bracket off the front and cut the rear bracket shorter and drill a hole to mount it in the factory position. I also had to cut a few inches off the header pipe where the two come together. I don't have a torch or a welder so I had to make an angle cut on the header pipe to try to keep the fishtail even with the swing arm. it is mounted temporary right now. it has a gap that needs to be fixed. my friend is gonna fix and weld it for me. I put the factory plate over the connecting pipes. the header slides into the fishtail about three inches.

It came with the baffle but it is not in it. The video does not do it justice on the sound. It is louder than the video shows.:D:ride:

I was thinking about that or a reducer with clamps or the reducer and welding. we'll see what I decide when things warm up again.

Reducer riveted should work very well but weld would be ideal,riviting is a pain any way.

:D I got the adapter in Thursday and installed it Saturday . everything looks and sounds good. Took my wife for a ride about 20 miles round trip and topped off the tank. With our combined weight of around 300 lbs. we still got the gz250 up to 68mph with some throttle left to spare. Bike is running nice and smooth!:ride:

What is your air filter/jetting? When I ditched the can stock it gained quite a bit of power.

I replaced the stock air filter with a gs500 hi flow air filter retaining the stock air box.

Awesome,when I got mine stock I cut the can off and went from a struggle to 55 to 75 easily. Deff gotta get bigger sprocket the vibes are killer on the highway.

I tried a few different sprocket sizes and ended back at stock. I put brand new front and rear sprockets and chain on a few weeks ago. I don't have any vibration problems.

Easy fix. Don't go over 65. The GZ will normally go faster than that but it won't like it.
In the real world the bike is geared for most riders and roads. It was never meant to be a freeway bike and competing with big bikes, cars and trucks.

That may be true but we had a rash of members with dropped valves which seemed to boil down to higher speeds and hotter engines. You have to keep in mind the GZ is a 3rd world bike. Made to be a workhorse and family limo rather than a racehorse.

Like an actual motorcycle. People can hear me coming now and it really allows for a more confident and safer ride. As well as looking and sounding really cool.

Please keep in mind that loud pipes do not save lives. A loud pipe is only heard by folks behind you, not anywhere else. There will be a few exceptions to the rule of course. I once had a friend "Andy" with a Vstrom 1000 with aftermarket mufflers..............very loud. I could hear his bike 300 or 400 feet behind me. I would never ride behind him for fear of hearing damage. Andy was already 90% deaf so he had no idea how loud the bike really was.

I measured the diameter of my pipe and looked around online and found some on ebay to fit. All I had to do was find the look I wanted. :ride:
