Help me decide on a buy!!!

Finally there is a GZ250 near me to buy! 2001 REd GZ250 with saddlebags and windshield. Talk him down to $2000. It only has 2500 miles on it but apparently the battery is ok. He orginally wanted $2500. Seems like a decent guy, but this seems a little high to me still.

Problem is, people are buying 250's left and right and I don't want to miss out? Should I get this one or wait a little longer. Seems like "gas hysteria" plus "riding season" = big markup on bikes! KBB is only $1960 RETAIL and like $1300 trade in!

What to do?

Your GZ

You are correct in the fact that people are buying up GZ's as gas prices rise. There are very few even on E-bay these days. You can buy for $2000 when retail is $1960? With mileage that low, a fairly un-common color, saddlebags, and windshield, I'd say go for it as long as there is no body or paint damage and all services are up to date.

IMHO, I don't think you'll see many more with that low mileage and the extras for that price. Or you might have to wait a while. A new windshield and new bags would set you back $150 to $250.

With saddle bags, a windshield and that mileage, I'd say it's a fair deal. I would check out the tires and make sure there's no dry rot. Don't know where you are, but geographical location has an effect on value. If you can ride all year long, prices will tend to be higher.

I bought my 2002 GZ250 with 4000 miles for $1750. It had a new battery, new rear tire with less than 100 miles on it, a Metzeler front tire with a ton of tread, and a windshield. They wanted $2000, but I offered 'em $1750 cash on the spot. Gas prices seem to have really inflated motorcycle prices, so even though I paid a bit more than NADA value, I'm still pretty pleased.

I'd say go for it. They are becoming more and more scarce.

Things to keep in mind: (some mentioned already)

The bike is 7 years old. Having "only" 2500 miles on it is not necessarily a good thing.
You will need to run some carb cleaner through it for sure.
Check the bottom of the bike (and chain) for rust.
You will certainly need a new battery soon.
You will probably need new tires soon too; after 7 years they will be stiff and hard, useable but not good.

Be SURE that you, or someone you trust, takes it for a test ride of at least 10 minutes or so.

He will probably be able to get $2000. You just have to decide if it will be from you or not.

It sounds like a reasonable deal, especially with the exploding interest in economical 2-wheeled transportation. The price you are talking about is a couple hundred than I paid last June for my red 2001 with a windshield and 300 miles (no bags). You may not find another soon. (BYW, I love the red.)

I bought my 2003 with 721 miles for $2100. Went to the dealer yesterday and saw a 2006 with 1021 miles on it for get this.......$3125. Looked like it was in perfect condition, a beautiful silver, not a scratch on it and no blue pipes. Even that I couldn't believe the price tag.

gz buy

you people in the us have a different market then us in canada. $2500 is a steal for us. I saw 20 yr old 250 for 1750 here from a deler with 30 days wrranty.

I paid $3000 for my bike 2 years ago with 9000 km from a dealer in mint condition with 120 day 3000 km 100 % warranty and have no problems . very reliable.
