new grips
 

i bought some new grips the other day and was wondering if there is much to changing them out.
do they just slide off and slide back on? do I have to have the slider thing on the end?
and do i need a need a new tube? thx for the help

I replaced my grips last week. All I did to remove the old ones was to lightly cut the length of the old grip with a razor knife, then pull off the old grips. There was no glue left over on the left side handle bar, and just a little bit on the throttle tube, which peeled right off. I used the Scott Grip Stick glue (2.00 at most cycle shops) to put the new grips on, let 'em dry overnight, and they don't twist or move at all.

What do you mean by the "slider thing on the end"? The bar end weights? These are to dampen steering vibration, road input, and should be on the bar ends. It screws out to remove, but part of it may remain inside. If this is what you are referring to, read the other threads on this.

Yeah, you probably should keep the end weights.

If you don't want to buy a special glue, you can use hairspray. Just spray the bar and inside of the grip really good and slide them on. The spray will dry quickly and they won't ever move.

About the bar ends...remember not to unscrew them completely. Just enough to loosen them, then grab them good with a cloth-covered pair of vice-grips or pliers and pull straight out without twisting. If you screw them out entirely, you lose the inside nut to the bottom of the bars.

the grips i bought wont work with end weights there caped should i not use them than?

If they're rubber, you can cut the ends off. If they're chrome or similar, you'll have to go without the weights, just try riding it without the weights before putting the new grips to see if the vibration is too much.

I don't have bar ends on mine, and I have never really noticed a lot of issues. They may make it handle a tiny fraction better and reduce some vibration, but they're definitely not necessary.

It's probably personal preference, and somewhat dependent on each bike, and how much vibration is present, I guess.

I did note a difference with the new bars in the few days I didn't have the ebd weights on them, the mirrors had a nasty tendency to vibrate themselves loose. The old bars, however, I didn't notice much difference between having the weights and not having the weights.
