Looking for a sissy bar that doesn't cost an arm and a leg
New here and have gone through several pages looking at what everyone else has done. Just picked up a 2008 gz250 and now I'm looking for a sissy bar on the cheap.
Anyone know if this will work with some added holes? This one seems to be of a little better quality without rack but can add rack later. Predrilled holes are at 8.5 inches and on the GZ they are at 7 inches so I know I would have to drill some new holes which isn't a problem. Thought the price would be hard to beat. |
Awesome price. This particular rack is a lot wider than one for the GZ. You have to make the GZ fatter or the rack narrower. That could be a deal killer.
|
Well that is a bummer. Added the second one to that post probably while you were looking and/or responding to my question.
Imagine both of these are too wide. |
It looks like the brackets could be mounted in a way that would allow a narrower mounting point. Switch sides for the brackets and mount them to the inside. Should gain an inch or so.
|
There is only one way to find out for sure.................spend some gas money.
|
been searching those same links for same reason
|
Well spent gas money! Ended up ordering this one and it worked out great!
Had to drill 2 5/16 holes and purchased a few longer bolts so I spent about $10 on hardware. Total before tax: $56.90 from Amazon + $10 or so for bolts and nuts. Got it mounted tonight took about an hour an 2 trips to the hardware store. Sorry for the potato quality cell phone pic from the garage. Deleted pic since it kinda broke the page. See next post! |
Woah that photo was huge on my screen
Imgur gallery of 3 pics I'll try to get some better pics if anyone is interested. |

I got this sissy bar/luggage rack for a Honda shadow and made it work for $60. I'm happy with how it turned out. Surprised how hefty the bar/rack was. It was a close match. 4 longer bolts, 2 new holes, and 3 extra washers on each bolt to space it. better quality pics https://plus.google.com/116469220831...ts/AM4FxJKLNMs |

chuck PS: My 1st post on this forum. :ride: |
I cannot remove bolts whitout removing the tire Q_Q
|
Try lifting the back end up, with stands or something. That'll let the wheel drop to give you more room to work.
|
I'll try, thank you so much! will post some pics later :D
|
There wasn't much room for my hands but I was able to do it without removing the rear.
|
When I was putting bag supports on Lynda's GZ I had problems with tight quarters under the rear fender. Then discovered an easy method. When working on the right side bolts I just slide my left hand over top of the tire from the left side to reach the hardware on the right side. There is actually a lot of usable work space up there once you get to it.

Rebel 250 Sissy Bar/luggage rack that Might Fit...
$78 with sissy and luggage rack, anyone tried this?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/162419773855....N36.S1.R1.TR2 I'm gonna pull the trigger and let you know if it works! |
Yes, please. I've been looking around and just getting disappointed repeatedly with how many bars/racks there are out there for an affordable price, and the gz ones are like $200 bucks or more.

I'm working from memory here so it may be a bit of a challenge but I'm sure it is possible. |
Wait a damn minute! If I understand what you are saying, that is a DAMN FINE idea. Definitely going to the hardware store and checking out what they have..... cuz now I have tons of options and ideas.
Thank you a million time over! |

I just wander around a big box hardware now and again to see alternatives to shopping online with my hard earned cash. |
It's gonna take some fiddling around though to make the idea in my head work.
The 90degree L brackets would make the sissybar back be vertical or nearly so. Need to find one that has wide enough legs to drill in new holes on the upright portion. I totally see how this will work though. |
This is what I made. Used 3/8 steel rod, steel sheet (Don't remember gauge), and 3/8 square tube. Cut a design out of the sheet to look well with or without saddle bags. I also wanted a sissy bar that was easy to remove which is where the square tube comes in. I closed of the bottom and welded it to the plate. The sissy bar then just slides down into the tube and bracket for about a 5 second install or removal. At the top of the bar I welded in a "t" bracket from the hardware store so that I had something to bolt the pad to. Cost me about $24 and 3 hours. https://ibb.co/f7X3Kk
