Exhaust

Well now that winter has struck I am looking for a new option for my exhaust. I'm not a fan of the stock bulky one. Does anyone know of something shorter or straight pipes.

mainlinecoffee 01-21-2014 04:14 AM

Are you looking for power or decibels?

akaert2002 01-21-2014 08:22 AM

Cosmetic. You cant really make it sound bad ass.

akaert2002 01-21-2014 11:30 PM

Unless someone knows of something that is loud and looks nice

akaert2002 01-22-2014 12:05 AM

Does anyone know if this fits.

I made a custom pipe for mine and it's pretty badass, straight pipe turns almost vertical at back axle. Stock header to one and half inch pipe, almost painful but they will hear me 45 seconds before they see me...I can't help with chrome but I would say you are better making one than paying for it. Ever consider a cherrybomb? Low rumble but not obnoxious. Could do a drag pipe or custom 1-2 split using couplings instead of welding.

alantf 01-22-2014 10:27 AM

If you make it out of steel, you probably won't be able to get it chromed. I was watching "auction hunters" type programme. The guy found a load of bike parts, and took them to a bike restorer. The pipe was flat black, but the restorer said that there wasn't a chromer in America who would touch exhausts.

akaert2002 01-22-2014 01:47 PM

It dont need to be chrome. I do not know or have the tools to weld

Water Warrior 2 01-22-2014 04:32 PM

Take it from some one with hearing damage. Loud pipes may seem cool till you loose some hearing. Yeah it happens to everyone.
I had loud pipes on cages years ago and thought it was neat. Not so neat now though. Loud bikes will also annoy the hell out of your neighbors too.

mainlinecoffee 01-22-2014 05:57 PM

I always figured the pipes won't save a life but if the cager gives me a second look they may not kill me. Two years ago I got both my arms broken ripped all the muscle up right leg and almost lost left nut because a woman in a Lexus didn't look left before she pulled across a main road...i can take a hit to my hearing to help insure it dosnt happen again.

Ouch! Bet that left a mark or two.

At least wear ear plugs to minimize hearing loss. I had to wear plugs while riding because my ears were very sensitive to certain sounds after a while. Hearing loss is preventable but not repairable.

This may sound awful but it's no real concern. Between bikes guns and head trauma I'm pretty far gone on highs and mids, really don't plan on living long enough to suffer.

As far as exhaust goes, what about a glass pack slip on? With maybe a turnout extension? The gz is not a big bike and will never mimic one but I think most people could enjoy a low rumble at idle to a high whine on the top end.

That does sound awful. How old are you now?? You just may live longer than expected like I did. Passed my statistical due date 15 years ago.

A small glass pack may work beautifully. Not expensive either. Ear plugs are even cheaper by the dozen.

mainlinecoffee 01-23-2014 05:05 PM

I have always liked the low thump of the thrush glass pack at autozone, only maybe 26 bucks.
that's why statistics suck, when I was early teen I was pretty messed up on dope and mad as a hatter, people were sure I wouldn't see 18. 22 now and kicked dope so now I guess I'm just a angry cynic. Life does have it's redeeming qualitys but for the most part there is enough suffering to go around and little hope to run with. The reason I love spinning wrench is because it is concrete and logic based,a great escape.

mainlinecoffee check this link on my gz250 and see if this is close to the sound you want. http://youtu.be/lcRMH7B7ym0
any opinions are welcome. lol.

grasshopper 01-24-2014 11:06 AM

akaert2002 is who I meant say to check the sound of my bike. of course all are welcome to check it out.

akaert2002 01-24-2014 09:40 PM

I like the sound but I hate the look of the muffler.

I plan on installing a fishtail pipe on it. I didn't like the look and sound of the factory muffler either. so I already change the sound now I want to change the look.

akaert2002 01-25-2014 01:49 AM

What did you do to change the sound

alantf 01-25-2014 04:37 AM

put a baseball card between the spokes ???? :D

lol. I did that when I was a young buck on my bicycle.

grasshopper 01-25-2014 08:20 AM

I took the whole exhaust off and cut a 2 inch by 3 inch square whole in the bottom of it at the back. now it bounces the sound off the ground. you don't see the hole unless you get underneath the exhaust. I was trying it out, if it didn't turn out the way I wanted I was gonna get another pipe anyway. it is not too loud. I got the fishtail pipe in yesterday and gonna put it on when it warms up, too cold to work on it right now.

I installed the fishtail pipe today.

check out the short sound video at....http://youtu.be/KIS9Hzv--f0
post your opinions.

ImaginativeFig 01-26-2014 09:54 PM

I'm not a big fan of loud things in general, but the fishtail looks kinda cool and it doesn't seem too terribly obnoxious on the noise front.

grasshopper 01-27-2014 08:46 AM

thanks. I have not been too far down the road with it yet to see if it is going to bother me on a long trip. I do have a baffle I can put in it if it does bother me.

mainlinecoffee 01-28-2014 02:10 AM

That fishtail is awesome!

grasshopper 01-28-2014 08:06 AM

I took the gz250 for a 35 mile ride yesterday and it did great. nice sound from the fishtail pipe. suppose to get some rarely seen snow in my area tonight. thanks for the comments everyone. please leave more opinions.

mainlinecoffee 01-28-2014 03:38 PM

Think you could get a pic of the cutout?

grasshopper 01-28-2014 03:59 PM

I'll try to take some in the next few days.

grasshopper 01-28-2014 06:15 PM

this is the fishtail pipe I ordered from ebay.

grasshopper 01-28-2014 06:28 PM

this fishtail pipe was 30 inches long. I had to cut a few inches off and cut the bracket off the front and cut the rear bracket shorter and drill a hole to mount it in the factory position. I also had to cut a few inches off the header pipe where the two come together. I don't have a torch or a welder so I had to make an angle cut on the header pipe to try to keep the fishtail even with the swing arm. it is mounted temporary right now. it has a gap that needs to be fixed. my friend is gonna fix and weld it for me. I put the factory plate over the connecting pipes. the header slides into the fishtail about three inches.

mainlinecoffee 01-30-2014 05:53 AM

That is a sweet set up,I never had any luck keeping the pipe straight when I set mine up but I was using standard car pipes,it looks really good the way you have it. Are there baffles or just straight?

mainlinecoffee 01-30-2014 05:55 AM

If you are not opposed to ugly you could cut a beer can and fill it out with gasket goo and clamp it all tight to set, that's what I did, looks like you are keeping it legitimate though.

It came with the baffle but it is not in it. The video does not do it justice on the sound. It is louder than the video shows.:D:ride:

I was thinking about that or a reducer with clamps or the reducer and welding. we'll see what I decide when things warm up again.

mainlinecoffee 02-03-2014 04:08 AM

Reducer riveted should work very well but weld would be ideal, riviting is a pain any way.

grasshopper 02-03-2014 08:52 AM

I ordered the adapter to fill in the gap. It should be here this week.

mainlinecoffee 02-04-2014 12:04 AM

Where did you find one?

grasshopper 02-04-2014 08:26 AM

I found it on ebay.

grasshopper 02-09-2014 08:37 AM

:D I got the adapter in Thursday and installed it Saturday . everything looks and sounds good. Took my wife for a ride about 20 miles round trip and topped off the tank. With our combined weight of around 300 lbs. we still got the gz250 up to 68mph with some throttle left to spare. Bike is running nice and smooth!:ride:
