Fork Seal Replacement

Hey everyone from Jacksonville, Fl

Just looking to see if anyone has ever replaced their fork seals, mine are leaking and need it badly. I'm more of a DIY guy, so I really want to tackles this on my own. I'm fairly mechanical, just have never worked on a bike in this magnitude.

Anyone have any tips, or ever a guide to doing this?

Brandon

Mamahemp just posted a similar issue. Use the "search" feature. I think she used the word "shock" (and, well, I l know I did.)

Get a shop manual (or print out part of the one on here) and go for it.
IIRC, dealing with the compressed spring can be a little tricky......but I've not done it myself.

Re: Fork Seal Replacement

So I got to work on it saturday afternoon at about 4pm. The job took a buddy and me about 2 hours to complete, only for the fact that we have never done it before.

It went really smooth thanks to the guide, so I really appreciate whoever posted that.

Sorry for not taking any pictures, I didn't have my camera on me, and my buddies camera is waaaaaaay to expensive to get grease all over it.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, either on here or on my email, nodnarbing@gmail.com

Did you get the "Special Tool"(tm) to put the seals in, or how did you do it? I'm about a month away from doing mine and debating on whether to buy the "Special Tool"(tm) or not.

Ahh, yes...that part.

I didn't have the tool, so it was a pain to do. We took the old slide ring and carefully hit a flat punch with a hammer to get it down. Not fun to do at all, but it worked.

If you've got extra cash, go for it. It would save you a good bit of time.

Also, make sure someone else is there to help you when you get the dampener bolt out, that was rough

I've also heard of guys using pvc pipe slit down the middle with a hose clamp instead of that special fork seal driver
