Start Up Problem
 

I own a 99 GZ250 I bought used in Oct. 2011. For the first 3 months I owned it wold always start with the slightest touch of the starter button regardless of weather or any other conditions. Suddenly one day it wouldn't start. All it would do is crank. I figured out that if I turned the kill switch off and then back on (sometimes more than once) it would start very quickly. And sometimes I have to turn the key switch off and then back on to get it to start. I have tried not using the kill switch and just turning off with the key but that doesn't change anything. I have read the owners manual on the proper procedure for start up and that doesn't help either. Has anyone else had this problem or can you give me any ideas?

These things are known to develop some crud on the contact under the kill switch.

Try a blast of electrical contact cleaner under there and then switch the thing back and forth a few times.
It's obviously not that bad if the occasional flick is making it work.
In really bad cases, I would advise pulled the thing apart and thoroughly cleaning the contacts. But yours just needs a little bath.

Well, the contact cleaner helped but I still have to toggle the kill switch one time before I get any fire. Anymore suggestions?

Check the switch your bike has it by the clutch. It's a small stick coming out, when you press the clutch. My stick-switch started to stick out not to the fullest, so it didn't give enough of the contact to start the bike. One tiny amount of wd 40, fixed it.

I found that switch and used a little WD-40 on it. Didn't help. I do appreciate your trying to help me.

Does this stick-switch come out to the clutch-lever?

Yes it does. It seemed to be working fine but I gave it a shot of WD-40 for good measure. I think the problem has to be in the kill switch because now I just have to toggle it once. I have tried it every way I can think of ,starting with the switch off and toggling it to on or starting with the switch in the on position, or toggling it off and then back to on before the first try. It doesn't matter, it still makes me toggle it off and then back on after the first try before it will start.
