I wish it was a before pic but I just sat the linkage on the shaft and there's not enough tension on the cable, so I"ll try to align the hash mark with the gap in the linkage.

Replacing Clutch Cable

Putting on a new clutch cable. I removed the linkage from the shaft but can't remember which way it goes back on. I see a slash mark on the top of the shaft, is there a certain way that it installs...

Took the engine apart, including splitting the cases, found all the broken parts. Put new piston/rings (stock) honed the cylinder - compression 160 lbs. Cleaned and lapped the valves. New gaskets....

It survived but is well worn. Found replacement parts on fleabay - a lot cheaper than the dealer. When I get the parts I'll post back my progress.

Finally found the time to work on the GZ; The timing chain did snap and damage was good, but the piston, cylinder are ok.

I don't plan to order any parts until I strip down the engine and see what has happened. I've rebuilt three Harley engines so this one should be easier ( I hope) but it will be a lot lighter to lift...

Timing chain or cam chain, same thing. Runs from the crankshaft to the cylinder head. Parts prices aren't that bad, it'll be a fun project.

The timing chain on my son's 2001 snapped while out riding yesterday. Luckily he coasted to a stop.

Looking at rebuilding the engine within a few weeks, have to get parts first (gaskets/chain)....

I checked the stator it's putting out 60 volts AC at about 5000 rpm and its not shorted to ground. I think the volt regulator is the problem.

The battery in my 2001 keeps dying. At idle the battery charges at 14.2 volts, as I increase the throttle the voltage drops to 13.2 but still charges the battery. Suspect my 3 yr old battery needs...

I'll find out tomorrow when I start the bike. Have to let the gasket sealant on the valve cover set for the night. The machine shop did a good job of rethreading the spark plug hole, but advised me...

Since I had the carb off to remove the head I decided to clean it. The bike has been fouling spark plugs for years.

The cap was on the mixture screw from the factory. I drilled out the cap and...

Got the head off and here's a pic of the piston top, lots of metal shavings and carbon buildup. New gaskets came in yesterday (base and headgasket) now to put it all back together. Local machine...

Yes I tried that but it keeps going into the threads he screwed up. I was thinking of getting a thread chaser - what size would I need?

My son decided to change the spark plug and cross threaded the hole. He got the plug about 3/4 was in and of course it won't go any further. I got it out but what's the best was to fix it???

My wifes bike (2001) runs like crap so I'm doing the shim mod and to my surprise there is no spring on the needle, just the needle, spacer, circlip and washer. I checked the microfiche and it shows...
