Re: My GZ and S40(Savage 650) comparison

Looking at people's MPG figures on fuelly.com, the S40 achieves similar fuel economy to Vulcan 500.

I moved up from GZ250 to Vulcan 500 LTD myself and consider it a great step forward. The engine...

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

Thanks, all!

Yeah, that's why I went for 2008. Otherwise I would have bought new as well.

Same here. This weekend was great weather. I still need to get a small windshield for it.

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. I ended up going with an '08 Vulcan 500 LTD.

So far I like it a lot. I love how smooth and stable it is on the hwy, while still not too...

Re: Gear Shifting

alanmcorcoran, how much do you weigh? I can hold 70 mph in 5th rather easily on flat ground if there is no strong headwind. I weigh 150 lbs though.

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

That's what I've heard too - no Vulcan 500 for 2010. Supposedly it would need fuel injection in order to pass the latest emissions requirements. This means more expensive bike, and Kawasaki doesn't...

Re: Headlight range - adjustable?

FYI, I ended up following these directions to adjust my headlight:

Re: Headlight range - adjustable?

Yeah, that's what I'll try to do.

By the way, I also found this:

Re: Headlight range - adjustable?

I can't see how this could be accurate since the bike's headlight is about 3ft off the ground while the car's headlights are about 2ft off the ground. Maybe your car's headlights sit higher (like on...

Re: Headlight range - adjustable?

Doh! You're right. It is in the owner's manual. I only looked in the service manual and did not find it, but I forgot to check the owner's manual.

Thanks everyone!

Headlight range - adjustable?

The range of my headlight (low beam) seems to be really short. How long is it supposed to be and is it adjustable? Mines probably like 20 feet. It's a bit scary driving at night with speeds above...

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

That Shadow looks pretty nice actually. 2.9-gal tank? How many miles do you get before you hit reserve?

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

Yeah, it's just the looks I guess. According to specs, the S50 and the Vulcan 500 have very similar seat height:

S50: 27.6
Vulcan 500: 28.1
GZ250: 26.8

One bad thing about the S50 is a kind...

Re: Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Seems like the Vulcan may be what I want after all.

The problem is that nobody around here will actually let you test drive a bike like that... dealers...

Lightweight yet more powerful bike?

I can see myself upgrading from the GZ250 to something more powerful (500-600cc) within a year so that it's more highway-capable, but similar riding position to GZ250.

However, I would like...

Re: Not enough space between brake pads

Looks like installing these shims has made the noises go away.

Thanks everyone for educating the poor noob.

Re: Not enough space between brake pads

Yeah, now that you mentioned it, it does seem kind of obvious. They were sitting on the old pads, but not on the new pads that I bought. Thankfully I still have the old pads (although they were...

Re: Not enough space between brake pads

They are OEM pads I got from cheapcycleparts.com. It doesn't sound like they are slightly rubbing against rotors (that's a separate sound). It sounds like they're vibrating in the calipers or...

Re: Not enough space between brake pads

Got it greased up, but it's still making the noise. Maybe it just needs some time for the pads to break in. When I lift the front wheel, it spins fine.

Re: Speed vs. Life of GZ250

Mounts are fine, but because there are only two of them (nothing holding the shield from the bottom) then it'll never be super stable me thinks.

Re: Not enough space between brake pads

The only thing I was able to find at the local AceHardware was SuperLube synthetic multi-purpose grease. Says it's good up to 450F. Maybe I'll keep looking...

Re: Speed vs. Life of GZ250

Mine's the SS-06 Spitfire. It seems to wobble quite a bit at higher speeds.

Re: Gear Shifting

Which specific carb cleaner additives can you guys recommend? Is Techron Concentrate OK to use? I use it in my cars sometimes.
