Alan, as you are probably aware, folks in the US are more than a little eager to sue in court over some ridiculous things. Several years ago some of the manufacturers got sued for calling them crash bars here and regardless of whether they lost that suit or not, they decided to change the designation to "Engine Guards" to avoid any implication that they would protect the rider in a crash. That, of course, does not mean they won't or can't or whatever, help protect you, only that the manufacturers here decided that if they didn't designate them in a way that might be construed to imply that they would protect the rider, they have less chance of getting sued by someone who had them and got injured in an accident anyway. The most they might be liable for as Engine guards would be the cost of an engine, but an injured person could end up costing them millions. Thus, the name change in the states.
