[edit] once it feels "stripped" the nut is so loose that it doesn't touch the rubber anymore. Then, you can only tighten the bolt when the nut (part #8 on alantf's diagram) sits against the rubber (part #7) which you can accomplish by gently pulling the bolt (part #3) while turning it, to make it all tighter. Once you got the bolt against the weight, tighten it another couple turns to have the rubber expand.
