I had a similar problem previously. Bike ran fine one night, stopped to go to the store and when I came out the bike would start but as soon as I applied throttle the bike would die. I had my local mech check things out and it turns out the battery was the culprit.
My bike would start but as soon as I tried to ride the bike would die. My mech checked the battery and it was toast. Once I replaced the battery, bike started right up and I had no further problems...
Only posting because this might be an option for you to check....
