What do you experts think? Maybe I sure just replace just because? If I do I have read that K/N makes one that can be used?
I think you'll decide to use it a bit longer when you see the price of a new one !!!

You can't tell the condition by looking at the OUTSIDE because the dirt is trapped on the INSIDE of the element......which is just the opposite of most applications. So to clean one, you would blow vigorously on the outside and then shake, tap and blow gently on the inside to flush out the loose dirt/dust.

I would NOT recommend a K&N or any other after-market replacement because the filter is an important part of "tuning" the carb. fuel ratio. If you don't believe this just ride it for a few hundred yards with the air filter OUT. Do NOT do this in traffic though as you might get run over as it sputs and stumbles.

If you don't ride in dust or on unpaved roads, my guess is 10,000 miles or 5 years.
Oddly enough, when the filter starts to plug, you may notice a slight decrease if fuel mileage and a slight increase in performance for a while.
