A LOT of years ago, I had a bicycle with no fenders. I lived in the country, on a tar and chip road......only back then, it was more tar than chips. Ruined pants, shirt, shoes and my HAIR !! That hot tar didn't feel very good either. My "cool" bike didn't look so cool anymore either. :shocked:

In England, fresh tar & chips used to mean smashed windshields on cars, especially if you were going slow, while the guy coming towards you was going hell for leather!

On some roads, (mainly back highways nowadays) they will lay down hot tar and spread pea gravel on top of it, instead of your smooth black asphalt, pressed with a steam roller road you see for the most part now.

But I Think Easy is referring to a different type of substance all together, it seems as if I remember seeing roads where they spread chipped up asphalt or chipped up grey rock, but I could be wrong.

Those pea gravel highways and roads are actually usually pretty smooth riding, only problem is they get slick as hell when they are wet.

No, that's exactly what I meant. I think the name comes from using rock "chips" that are more flat than round.....so that they tend to lay flat and stick better. All kinds of different things are actually used though, including sand.

It doesn't surprise me that a "city boy" wouldn't know about such things. :biggrin:
Us country folk call it road "oil".
