2003 GZ250 for $1K... and 50,000 miles.

Hi everyone, first post here.

In two days I am planning on purchasing a 2003 GZ250 with 50,281 miles on it for $1,000. I'm having second thoughts because of the high miles. It was originally listed at $1,300, but we settled on $1,000. I've yet to see the bike, but will of course see it before purchasing on Saturday.

Is this too much money for a GZ250 with that many miles?

It depends on condition. If you are not familiar with motorcycles, take a friend who is. Check the general overall condition of everything. Check the tires for dry rot and checking on the side walls, wheels and spokes, cables, lights and signals. Check and see how easy it starts and how it sounds when it is running. If he will let you ride it, check brakes and how easy it shifts, etc. It all hinges on how well it was taken care of. Ask how often he serviced it and if he kept any repair invoices. Worst case scenario, you could probably part it out and get some of your money back. I am sure others will come onto the forum and give you additional and even better advice. If it's not to late.
I'd shy away from that many miles on that small a motor.

IMHO I'd say if you got the right answers abut maintenance, etc...not a bad price. Closer to $800 or so would be better since they are keeping the bags. I've got close to 30k on my bike and I know I can get at least $800 if not more if I trade up.

But like anything, your mileage may vary...

Thanks to everyone for your great advice. And because of that advice (along with discussing with my wife), I decided to go in a different direction. I was able to get a great deal on a new 2014 Burgman 200 ABS with the 0% for 60 months deal. Gonna take delivery of it tomorrow morning.

Oh neat! Be sure to give us a report on the bike. Fit, finish, comfort and all that stuff. The baby burg should be a wonderful learning tool to aquire riding skills for your wife. But please make sure she wears riding gear and gets into the habit for her rides.
