Why is there gas in my air filter?

My 2004 Suzuki ran fine the last time I rode Now it won't stay running bogs down and the idle stays high.

Could be a stuck float in the carb. Make sure you check that no fuel has entered the crankcase. Try some carb cleaner like seafoam. You may have to strip the carb and give it a good clean. Also make sure the petcock is operating correctly. It is a vacuum operated system and no fuel should be entering the carb when the engine is switched off.

You'll also need to ensure that no gas has leaked into the crankcase in the process.

Drain the air box via the plug on the low-side tube. (It hangs down past the frame under the bike.)
Remove your air filter to make sure it's good and dry.
Open your oil-filler port and take a sniff. If it smells like gas - change your oil.

Give the float bowl a couple taps with a screw driver handle to hopefully dislodge anything that might be interferring with the float. Also pinch off the fuel line and run the engine till it runs out of gas. This will cause the float to drop to it's lowest level. You could dislodge something in there. Worth a try and nothing to loose but a few minutes time.
Oh yeah, set out a fan to cool the engine while runnning it.
