Handlebar grips

On my 99 GZ on the right grip, the screw holding on the end cap is stripped out inside the handlebar. Cannot figure out how to get the grip off to repair (or if I even need to remove grip). Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks.

You don't need to remove the grip. The bar end weight has a long screw that goes through a rubber, inside the bars, to a nut. As you tighten the nut, the rubber is expanded, holding everything in. It seems strange that the thread is stripped. Have a look at the parts in the manual that you can download on the site. You may be able to pull everything out. What you don't want to do is unscrew completely, because then, when you get the bar ends off, you'll leave the rubber & washer & nut inside the bars.

[edit] once it feels "stripped" the nut is so loose that it doesn't touch the rubber anymore. Then, you can only tighten the bolt when the nut (part #8 on alantf's diagram) sits against the rubber (part #7) which you can accomplish by gently pulling the bolt (part #3) while turning it, to make it all tighter. Once you got the bolt against the weight, tighten it another couple turns to have the rubber expand.

The screw had already come completely out when we bought in last Aug.

There's only one thing for it, then. Use the bent over end of a wire coathanger or old spoke, & hook the rubber out, then try to get the bolt & washer out somehow.

OK, first the legal liability disclaimer.

1) Don't try this
2) You could kill someone
3) You didn't hear this from me.

I read this trick on a bathroom wall, that there is a method to "possibly" eject the stuck bar end insert. Spray some WD-40 into the gap of the stuck bar end (try to lube the rubber insert). If possible remove the opposite side bar end, Securely duct tape an air nozzle to blow air inside the handlebar. Tap a rag (as a safety precaution) over the stuck bar end, and blow high pressure air. You might get lucky.... and KAPOW! The bar end will be ejected out from the handlebar....

Sounds like a plan that would work. Just wear a full face helmet with the visor down. You never know when a part may come back to visit after bouncing off a wall.

You're going to need a really big sudden blast of air, more than you'd get from a shop compressor or at a gas station. Like from one of those pressurized tanks at a tire place that they use to seat the bead.
