Don't imagine it as an open switch. Imagine it as corroded contacts and it's only able to pass 5 to 7 volts turned on and under load.
That might be enough to engage the starter selenoid but not enough to get the igniter goin.

I have learned that on my bike.. If it fails to start but cranks.. A simple off and on of the kill
switch does the job.

Yes. The ignition switch can also be the problem. Your right there and I've seen it on other
bikes.
But after seeing the problem numerous times. I know, on my bike, it's the kill switch.

One of these days I'll rebuild it but I've had to many other bads land on my plate lately :-/

I guess my advice is get a DMM and verify voltages or use deductive reason.
Each time the problem happens try one idea 3 times. Eventually you'll prolly find it maybe.
XD

Not that I recommend it but you could hardwire the kill switch on the right handlebar
just to see if it temp fixes your problem. But that's not a permanent repair.

If this is contacts in your ignition switch then it can be cleaned and repaired but don't
try it if your a complete novice. Your likely to have a copper contact or a spring go
flying never to be found again.

If your really handy and have some good tools I could further advice the actual contact
cleaning.

So maybe try some contact cleaner first and if it helps have someone else rebuild it?

Get a genuine Suzuki ignition switch. The aftermarket Chinese ones are garbage. I bought one off ebay since I too didn't have a key. When I installed it and turned the bike on it blew the main fuse. The POS was wired all sorts of wrong. I thought about trying to rewire it but decided it wasn't worth the effort for such a crappy switch. I ended up taking the original ignition lock to a locksmith who was able to make a new key for it in about 30 minutes.

I would put money on your ignition switch being the source of all the problems.

I second what derbydave said. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend the cash.
