Question I'm shopping for a new motor.

Mine is making to much bad noise nowadays and I need the bike for commuting
so... I got a few hundred $ set aside and made a request to a net of 65 salvage
yards for a gz250 bare engine that can make an ok compression number.

What years can I safely swap into a 2000 model?

All models of G.Z. are same motor.

So what noise is being made? Where do you think it is coming from?

Piston slap.
Valve train noise even though lash is set right.
Nasty hit and miss clunks from case during gear engagement. Esp first at a stop.
Occasional lockups of shifting mechanism requiring numerous clutch engagements to sort.
Lots of rattling at startup till oil pressure builds. (always do a idle warm up)
Slow progressive loss of compression over time. (using 2 separate gauges to be sure)

I still have enough compression left to get it started most of the time first time but well below 100 psi now.
I'm not getting oil by the rings yet but enough blow by that I'm getting lots of oil in the airbox.
etc etc etc.
I've been asking to much of a small engine for a while now.
Saving for a bigger bike for this nasty commute.

You can't say the bike hasn't given it's heart and soul to you. Luckily you can get a transplant.

I'm definitely gonna keep this 'little bike that could' but plans may have changed.
I hope to have enough saved before it expires to buy something with some more
mass to it.
A liter plus v-twin perhaps.


Then I'll go back to rebuild the pipsqueak.

There are a large number of sub 1000 V-twins on the market. Cheaper to buy and own when you add in insurance and maintenance. Bigger means more fuel costs, bigger means more expensive tires too.
Not saying you shouldn't go bigger than 1000cc's but there are some nice lighter alternatives. I'm sure you could find a nice comfy bike without entering land yacht country.
