Hi From a Bike NOOB

Hello everyone,
I joined the rest of the US and got tired of gas prices so I bought a 2000 GZ250 from a coworker with only 500 miles on it. I never rode a bike before the safety course but did pass it first time a month ago. at age 42 I at first felt silly just getting into it until I saw that most of my safety course classmates were at least as old as I am and many more older.

I've been reading the forums for a while now and I have to agree that at least for this noob, I'm still a bit intimidated about anything above 35 mph for now. I got the bike up to 50 last weekend on a beautiful non-windy day and I felt like the wind was trying to knock me off of the bike.
Any advice on how to get over the trepidation is greatly appreciated.
Here is a pic of my bike....
