Hey there all - just thought I might put my 2 cents in...

For starters, I am guessing that the bike must sound much different from behind than it does from on top, because mine is stock, and I like the sound of it. It's no Harley sound, but then again, it's no Harley, and I don't particularly like when bikes are obnoxiously loud. So as far as that part goes, I am pretty much with Easy Rider - not so sure why it's such a big deal. I mean, anyone who knows the slightest bit about bikes isn't going to be fooled into thinking it's a shovelhead or something from the exhaust sound! Lol :neener:

As far as the backfiring and popping - couldn't that also be from a misadjusted carb? Lord knows I am no master mechanic, so I could be totally off here, but seems if I remember from when I was young and had an old beater I could work on myself, that we used to get the thing to backfire/not backfire by adjusting the carb. What do you think people - is it a possibility?

And if that were the case, the rust would just be due to sitting with moisture in it, and unrelated to the backfiring. Just my thoughts.

Good point Kev. Moister in the muffler will definitely breed rust. That is one reason not to do shorter rides. Always try to get in a longish ride that will really warm up the entire exhaust system and dry the innards. Also a mighty fine excuse to take the long way home from an errand. 200 kms works well for me.
