Fuel cock is leaking. Repairable?

The fuel cock on my GZ is leaking while the engine is running. It's about a drop every 15-20 seconds. It doesn't leak if the engine is off, even in the prime position.

I haven't found a repair kit for it yet. I've repaired them on other bikes, but it was a while ago. I may have to just take it apart and take a look, but I just filled the tank.

Has anyone else repaired them?

In my experience,it is usually dirt that is making it leak.I took it apart and cleaned it and no more problem.

Thanks for the info. I'm draining the tank now to take a look.

Re: Fuel cock is leaking. Repairable?

Well, I took it apart and cleaned it. One of the gaskets (the one that looks like a smiley face) was a bit chewed up so I flipped it over. The diaphragm/gasket on the back side looked ok, but frail, so I didn't mess with it much. That was probably a mistake, because it still leaks after I put it back together.

It's leaking from the hole in the bottom of the plastic piece between the 2 diaphragms. That means the first diaphragm must have a hole in it. :curse: :cuss:

Replacement petcocks are cheap enough.

Or, you could just get some epoxy or QuickSteel and seal the leak. QuickSteel is impervious to gas and many other corrosive chemicals.

It doesn't look like anything has flaked off, but I'm sure I'll find out. I'll probably take the carb apart and clean it after this anyway. It's been about 5 years and 15,000 miles since it's been looked at.

For now I tried a seal-all gas resistant sealant repair. 5 bucks and 2 hours of my time. I'll let everyone know how it works.

I still wish I could find a gasket/diaphragm kit for it.

Re: Fuel cock is leaking. Repairable?

Well the repair route didn't work long at all. It started leaking again.

I pulled and plugged the vacuum line to the petcock, and ride with it on prime. It's not leaking that way and will work until I get a new one. It just bugs me to replace the whole thing (for $80 +), when the only things it needs are the rubber parts.
