Starter short?

I have a 1999 Suzuki Gz 250. I was riding and tried to honk my bikes horn but I pressed the starter switch instead and it killed the bike. Turned out that it blew the starters 10 amp fuse. I replaced the fuse and the bike started right up but now it seems to have a short. It randomly blows the starter fuse. Did I break my starter? Or is there something else I should be looking at? Thanks for any help. The bike runs great still as long as I don't use the starter. I just been bump starting it in second.

The starter circuit should not have been made unless one of the safety switches was closed. If the clutch was pulled in, then that would complete the circuit. Otherwise, a faulty side stand relay would do the same. That should be the only way a circuit to the starter motor would be completed with the bike running. When you made the circuit, the starter motor would try to mate to a rapidly spinning engine, and would probably jam/stall. There may be damage to the starter/gears. You may have to strip it down to check.

When I try to use the starter it does not do anything and blows the fuse is what I meant to say. I ended up taking off the starter and gas tank and cleaned and checked all the wires and stuff. Didn't see anything wrong. Starter has no damage to the gear or anything. So I put it all back together and tried it again. It started right up without popping the fuse. Tested it 4x and works fine now. Not sure what fixed it. I'm guessing it might have an issue with a wire somewhere but since its working I'm not going to mess with it anymore. I'll just keep some extra fuses under the seat in case it happens again. At least now I know how to not get stuck somewhere. Just have to bump it and Head home. Lol

Honestly, that's been an old mechanic trick for years.

"Just wiggle that there and see if it.... Well, there you go! Good as new."

before taking the starter out it would be better if you found the problem first & if something got traped between the st clutch & st gear than it may act up again hope its ok
