Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

The one from ebay didnt have a petcock hole on it. At all, no pre drilled hole for it or anything. So me and my brilliant ideas cut the old one off the old tank with some of the tank material around the threaded nipple the petcock gets tightened to. The only thing the new tank had was the 2 screw holes and the slot for the fuel gauge, but i dont have a fuel gauge so heres where my brilliant idea comes, haha. I put screws and tephlon tape in the screw holes on new tank, cut screw heads off. The cutout of old threaded nipple (for petcock) i jbwelded to the new tank, right over the fuel gauge slot, and hope it holds back fuel, but im not feeling it. Didnt fill gas tank yet.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

I would love to see a photo of this hack job

If getting gas is a hassle, just try some rubbing alcohol or a bottle of carb cleaner to see if it will hold liquid. I would say to just run some tap water in there, but don't do that. Which JB weld did you use? There is one that is impervious to chemical breakdown that I used on a brake fluid reservoir and it lasted more than a year.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

Ebay gz tanks looks like shit with dents and rust. Might just get one from Suzuki, but the dealer is no longer open due to Sandy that bitch.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

Rethink that... Even at Ronayers they are $531, which is insane.
At least a tank with dents will let the bike run.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

Might be worth it to try cleaning up the Ebay tank. Make sure it doesn't leak and then hand it over to a body shop for dent removal or just filling in the dents if they aren't to bad. Could be a lot cheaper than a new tank. Either way you will have to spend some more $ to make things right.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

Im worried it will leak from the Jb weld. Im stuck on this. Maybe grind off the piece i JB welded and clean it up with a grinder and do some real welding on the piece i cut off the old tank. I really dont want to spend that much on a new tank. Thats insane.

Re: GAS TANK AGAIN !!

You're worried it will leak, or it has already started to leak?
I used a product called QuickSteel that is supposedly impervious to chemicals once it cures. It had lasted about 10 months when I sold the bike it was on... Those are poor-man's stop gap remedies, but they'll at least get you running. There are different kinds of JB weld, and if you just used the basic, I think the gas will eventually eat through it.

You just aren't going to know if your homemade fix works or not until you put some gas in it. Hell, test it with water. They're both liquids. At least you would know if it's water tight.
