How many miles before I should start to think about getting my brakes checked

I check my breaks literally every other day I ride. The fronts are easy as pie to check (you just LOOK at them) and the backs take some twister action if you're by yourself, but it can be done. The manual suggests Inspecting, Cleaning, Adjusting, or Replacing every 600 miles. If you notice any degrading performance, then you might want to pay extra close attention to them.

Also, be very careful with spray lubricants (WD40) around your wheels. Any slight mist on your front rotor will cause a degradation and possibly a complete slip for the first couple of times you squeeze them.
