Hi from Marietta, GA

Hello all!

Just paid for a 2009 GZ250 with only 624 miles on it. Though I haven't taken delivery yet. (http://www.wowmotorcycles.com/)

If their link still works, here are the shop's pictures: http://www.wowmotorcycles.com/view-bike ... 0&source=S

Have since been going through this site and I keep seeing references to a "carburetor shim" mod.
As I live in a hilly region, how much impact would this have?

It has been 20+ years since I have been on a motor bike, so I figured this is a good re-entry point for switching to a lower gas cost commuter plan.

(My first bike was a Yamaha 650-overhead oil cooled. A beast compared to this one...)

Welcome to the forum.By shimming the needle, you make the mixture a little richer,as these bikes are very lean from the factory. You will see a bigger effect by adjusting the idle mixture screw out about 1/2 a turn(rich).Your bike will idle better & start easier.I would do both at the same time,as you need to drill out the plug to get to the idle mixture screw.

Hi there

Just noticed that it's marked up as a GZ250K. Anybody know what the K stands for? Never seen anything but a straightforward GZ250. :??:

The K would probably designate 09 as in 2009. The K being the 9th letter in the alphabet. Now just to show how silly that sytem works and is changed on a whim, my Vstrom is a K5. Don't know what the K stands for but the bike is 2005.

Welcome to the forum ! :2tup:

The link still works.

At that mileage I would make sure that it did get its 600 mile service.

I never done anything to the carburetor and it runs just fine as is. Need 4th gear to get up the steeper hills though.

Re: Hi from Marietta, GA

Just brought it home about an hour ago... left car w/ bicycle rack at WOW, rode/walked bike back, drove car home... *after buying gloves*//pain of the cold air is not a good thing to feel. and after also getting goggles... I am a contact lens wearer.

Now to see if I can make it to Panera's on Roswell in one piece.

[edit]

I made it.

Still trying to get back used to being so close to everything moving fast around me while not being in a box.

Waya you will soon have a whole new wardrobe to wear. Bikes do that for you.

Re: Hi from Marietta, GA

Hi waya, welcome aboard! I live in Kennesaw and bought my 2004 GZ250 from WOW about 5 years ago. Nice folks, HUGE inventory & decent prices. It's always fun to go down there and sit on all different types of bikes.

I did the needle valve shim, added a 16T sprocket and a windshield too. Feel free to PM me if you want go riding sometime.

The main thing done is a valve adjustment, also a oil change and a general check of the entire bike.
