(supposed) new breaks that squeak?

So I just bought a 2003 from a guy who claims he just replaced the front break pads. The breaks squeak and squeal when im rolling in N. Or really slow im 1st. if I lightly tap the front break it goes a way for a few rolls then starts again. Do they just need to be broken in? Or is their an easy way to check and see if the pads are bad without taking it apart? Its really embarrassing to ride through town with a squeaky bike.

Check if he's taken the anti squeal shims (thin metal plates) off the back of the old pads, & put them on the new ones. I bet he hasn't. Even if he hasn't, the squeal may go away when the pads bed themselves in.

My bike was a 2009 that I bought brand new and it squeaked for the 1st few months. I never knew why.

A few aggressive stops with the front brake might cure the problem in some cases.

Re: (supposed) new breaks that squeak?

When I last changed my breaks they squiled aswell, but it was always at low speeds and it was window shattering loud. After waiting a month thinking they just needed to be broken in, I took them apart and greased them with anti-squeel ( you can get it at auto zone, it a little packet and costs about a buck) and it fixed them right up. no squeel.

I changed my pads and used the grease and the metal back plate and NEVER heard a thing. Now, my back breaks do at first every ride but stop after a little while.

Typical of a drum brake on some vehicles. If you feel real energetic you can lightly sandblast the brake shoes and use emory cloth to clean up the brake drum. They could be glazed to some degree. We used to do that on our dirt bikes after dirty watercrossings and the brakes would get so bad they would not work at all.
