Replace or rebuild?

Just got a 2005 gz250 for $500. guy said top end needs rebuilt. bike is in awsome shape in all other areas. he gave me receits for everything he had done to it so i know it was at least worth the 500. but would it be better to buy a whole new engine so i can start on a fresh motor or replace the top end only?

What does the previous owner consider a top end? If it is just the head you may get away fairly cheaply. If he considers the top end to include the cylinder and piston but not the lower cases you may have a lot of expense to repair the engine. If that is the case you may be better off finding a complete used engine.
Not to worry though. Some one with more engine experience than I have will be along shortly to help sort things out.
