Neutral Indicator Light does not light

I looked in the service manual chapter 6, to see if a fuse could be ruled out, but couldn't trace to a fuse.

Looked under instrument panel and found the light's wires leading to a rubber type "boot" with an attached "well-type" protrusion that may house a screw/bolt but can't seem to figure out how to change the bulb. Pulled gently on the boot, but it may be secured by a bolt or something and I didn't want to mess up the electrical system by tugging for dear life.

Manual talks about a neutral indicator light switch underneath near kick stand switch but thought the bulb check may be the wiser first step.

Thanks in advance to the very helpful experienced contributors on this forum.

Re: Neutral Indicator Light does not light

Good thinking to check the bulb first. I changed 2 of them in the signal indicator and then decided to mount LEDs instead.

You can get it out by first working the entire light up though the dashboard about 3-4 mm carefully. I forgot if I used a little flat head screwdriver or just pushed it up from below - first try pushing it up. Then you take the lens out, and then you can pull the rubber part down through the hole. Then you roll the rubber down until the bulb is exposed.

Mine does the same thing but it also will die if you out the kickstand down so I am pretty sure it is the neutral safety switch so I have to look into where it is located. Has anyone seen this before?

The bike will die if you put the kickstand down while in gear - this is normal functioning of the safety switch.

Re: Neutral Indicator Light does not light

Thanks 5th-bike, I got it changed and it works! Followed your direction and it is right on.

Another tidbit for others who may go this route, the bulb pulls out; I think they call it a "knife or dagger" type of bulb. Also when reinserting the boot, I found that after putting the lens back in, by pulling down on the boot from underneath, it went back in and the lens seated itself in the instrument panel.

Got the bulb at the local Auto parts store for 64 cents.

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Neutral Indicator Light does not light

My bike would die with it in neutral, when you put the kick stand down. It turned out to be a broken wire under the seat that goes to the neutral safety switch. I repaired the wire and now it will run in neutral with the kick stand down.
