GZ250 Price advice

Hi Guys,

Have a few dealer options in my area.

2010 GZ250 with 3800 miles, asking $2999.......This seems steep considering that was the MSRP for a brand new bike.

2007 with 1189 miles, asking $1899....Starting to get closer. ***Just talking to the sales guy who said $2727 out the door, which seems ridiculous.

2007 with 4500 miles, asking $2495....more than the other 2007...

What do you guys think, is $1500 cash 'out the door' possible?

What should I try to get in terms of warranty?

Re: GZ250 Price advice

Lars!
All i can give you as an advice is to take with you some friend/mechanic who knows his job and bikes in overall. I was very pleased with buying bike advices here. I went with my girlfriend, who knows some tricks when buying used bike. Seeing mine, we were convinced that we bought the right one, with the right price. Friend mechanic who gave my bike some tlc, said at first glance that the bike is good and was well kept (it is about 12 years old after all...). Today it serves me well, i know i will have to change the chain at the end of season, but that's it.
So, go cheap, but don't go to cheap too. It also depends of the accessories the bike has, if has any. Mine has accessories which i would pay at least 400 dollars for them (custom made saddle bags, roll bar, sissy bar, luggage rack)... i also had to buy tires, maybe you, won't need them new (it's about 200 dollars cost)...

Buy good, ride well and safe!

Re: GZ250 Price advice

BTW: mine was 1200 euros, 2000 year... All the GZ's that were selling here were about the same price.

Re: GZ250 Price advice

Those 2007's have tires that are at least 5 years old if they are originals, as the battery may be.
You tell the dealer you want new tires or ones installed at dealer cost, a new battery, and an oil/filter change, then you'll talk to him more seriously.
The only thing you should have to pay extra for is the state tax. Tell them that the dealer fee for "dealer prep" and "documentation fees" is crap you will not pay, that's the cost of them doing business. Then if they won't negotiate with you, tell them to sell it to someone else if they can find them. Be firm, it will save you money.

A good source for new tires if you have to buy your own is Jake Wilson in Washington(hope that's right). They may have the correct size for the GZ.

Re: GZ250 Price advice

I purchased a 2007 Shadow Spirit with 7000 miles a couple months ago for $4500 'out the door'.. I know it is not a GZ, but this list from the bill of sale can give you an idea of the extra charges you could face if you don't get them included OTD:

Inspection:................14.50
License or title:..........74.80
State and local tax:..256.02
Dealer inventory tax:....8.40
Documentation fee:....50.00
(Dealer prep...No charge...The dealer changed the oil and filter, new air filter, charged the battery, shined her up real purty, and delivered her the next day by trailer.)

Except for documentation fee, everything else is required by a dealer under Texas law, so there was no way of getting away from them. Ask your dealer what added charges are required in your state, that will give you an idea of what you are dealing with. Keep in mind that the dealer will have to eat the required taxes/fees OTD, and he must still make some profit on the deal. I don't think your $1500 expectation is reasonable for any of the GZ's you listed.

Since mine was used, there is no warranty. I could have purchased one at a high cost (I don't remember how much). When I had problems with the bike not going faster than 60, I took her back to the dealer who fixed her for no charge, no warranty needed at that point.

Here is a tip: Don't ask the dealer what the OTD price is, tell him what you will pay OTD, and see where it goes from there. Be prepared to pay what you offered, in case he accepts.

I just got my 2006 for $1400, no dents and no rust 3400 miles. Anything above $2k sounds a bit steep to me.

Re: GZ250 Price advice

What do you guys think about a 2001 GZ250 with over 25,000 miles? Private seller asking 2100. I'd offer 7-800 cash, given that I've found a few threads of people paying 1000 for the exact model back in 2010 (with fewer miles).

Re: GZ250 Price advice

I had to choose between 2 bikes of the same year (2000), one with cca 6000 miles and other with 24000 miles, similar price, but the add ons were different. I went with the lower mileage, but friends told me that if he bik was well mantained it shouldn't be a problem. Today, i would choose propably the same --- less mileage... I'm a newbie, overcautious but still... i rather be selling with 22000 miles than buying...
