sounds so much like a toy

I really like my bike but when I ride with my son and soninlaw yamaha Vstar's ...my GZ sounds so much like a toy.
Can I replace the end part of the exhaust (where the baffle is) and put an extension on to make it sound better? I am guessing I will have to reset the carbs?

If any of you know where I can get the extentions for my GZ250 please post the link or give me a general place on the web to go?
Keep up the great work guys! this board is super!
Ride safe! Thanks

Re: sounds so much like a toy

You simply can't make the GZ250 sound like a v-twin anything. Even debaffling the exhaust will only make the bike sound like a loud lawnmower. It's generally believed that anything you do to try to make a bike sound better will result in a poorer running bike. It's just not worth it. Ride the bike for what it is.

I thought you had been browsing through the old posts.............guess you missed the ones about the muffler and sound.

The answer is NO, likely nothing you do will make it sound "better". Making it a lot louder is illegal and obnoxious (removing the muffler completely). It will never sound like a "big" bike.

The sound does change a bit after a few thousand miles; forgot what year/mileage yours is.

Except for the 16T front sprocket, most folks find that ANY tinkering with this little bike is an exercise in futility......and some don't even like that change either.

The best advice I can give you is: Ride it until the itch for a bigger, faster, louder bike becomes overwhelming and then trade it in. At that point, any radical changes you have made will cause it to be worth less; maybe MUCH less.

Others may disagree!

One more time: Those pipes are illegal in (at least) 48 states and, in my opinion, are obnoxious.
Taking a slightly different view, I think it is pathetic; a big bike wanna-be.

If you haven't figured it out already, loud pipes is a hot button issue for me.
Said my piece; I quit. :skull:

That's what txgent4you put in the subject header of his response to you and/or primal.

First of all he didn't take anything off of you, because HE didn't say that the GZ wasn't a serious motorcycle and was a novelty item, he just said it sounded like a toy, which it sort of does, but I kind of like it that way, sorta stealthy so I can sneak up on, or away from the zombies.

Did anyone notice that the video he posted has absolutely no treble in the audio? I'd be willing to bet that the bike doesn't sound anything like that in person.

If you want, I can post a recording of the Strat. You can just play that through some speakers in the saddlebags. No holes, no welding, no carb shim/trim/needle effery - and probably legal in most states! If you get sick of it, Sarris can record his HD.

Alan, thank you for the laugh. Very creative! :rawk:

Hey TX search the HOW-TO section for Dupos report on swapping the muffler.

Where do you get this from?

I put cobra pipes on my bike, hypercharger, Big City Thunder Baffles and a rejet ... and it sounds mean as hell .... and gained in HP. If making a bike sound better worsened the running cond of the bike, people wouldnt do it.

Two buddies of mine just swapped their pipes for a meaner sound. Had the bikes done at the Harley shop and Dyno'd and both of them gained HP.

When i did the pipe swap on the GZ .... it ran much better and had a little more pep to it.

Dupo 03-27-2009 12:10 AM

Re: sounds so much like a toy

Dude, find my write up on the GZ muffler swap. I put that EXACT same pipe on my GZ. Sounded great, was loud and obnoxious and gave me some pep increase.

It wont sound like a v twin ... but it'll make some noise.

I like my big ass illegal loud and obnoxious shadow much better than the GZ mod i did thats for sure. Nothing beats setting off sensitive car alarms in town at night. Pipes + baffle are about 90% free flow with just a washer baffle in there for back pressure. Open pipe sound but still has backpressure to keep things where they should be. That and with the hypercharger butterflies closing on decel ... it sounds like a jake brake on a rig going down hill.

You are now at stage 1 of 'im going to need a bigger bike'.

This is a very addictive thing I found happened on my Ninja, and only recently on my Shadow. Parking garages are fun.

Hmm, haven't had mine in a parking garage. Thanks, you just gave me something to do this afternoon in the 65 degree spring teaser day.

To be fair, rejetting isn't ALWAYS necessary, however I'd be willing to bet that the majority of the time it is to get a properly running engine. Besides, the leaner the fuel/air mixture, the hotter the bike runs. Not something I would want to fool with on an air cooled bike.

Dupo 03-27-2009 05:28 PM

Re: sounds so much like a toy

Rejetting on the GZ isnt necessary with a cutom pipe, thats been proven by me already.

Rejetting on say my Shadow, when upgrading pipes IS necessary. 3 stages of jets ... stage 1 for a filter upgrade. Stage 2 for filter + pipe upgrade. Stage 3 for filter + pipe + airbox modification.

You are telling everyone that changing pipes makes a bike run worse .... and I'm the inexperienced one? It runs worse if you only toss on some pipes and leave it be. If you know what you're doing, it runs better with more power.

Most Harley's are air cooled ...... and tons of them have custom pipes installed. Guess they shouldn't fool with their bikes either :??:

Holy fuck im done posting in this thread. I swear, anyone who wants to mod their bikes on this forum should be hung at noon for not conforming to 'standards'. OCC should close its doors forever for screwing with custom pipes i guess. They all must run hot as hell and have no power.

I think its time to make a MODDERS ONLY section on this forum.

Hey Dupo, did you get the GZ dyno'ed after you swapped the exhaust? Because if you're gonna be so hard headed about this, I wanna see some actual numbers rather than saying it "gave me some pep increase."

Just sayin'. ;)

Besides, you can hardly say I'm opposed to modding bikes. I am opposed to modding bikes without properly tuning them afterwards when needed.

Re: sounds so much like a toy

I just took a peek at the Muffler swap thread in the How To section and saw that you did in fact adjust the carbs by shimming the needle and richening the mixture, i.e. the same goal that rejetting accomplishes, but it just so happened that the required adjustments were able to be made without changing to larger jets. So, I guess we were both right in that you don't necessarily have to rejet, but you do have to richen the mixture to get the bike running well.

There are many people who appreciate the way the stock GZ250 sounds. During my trips on Maryland's beautiful backroads I meet a lot of walkers and bicyclists, many of whom give me big smiles just for happily riding a quiet bike, and not being one of those large (loud obnoxious) V-twins or dangerously speedy racers.
