Hit my first 'animal' a few days ago.

I was exploring a single lane back-road, it only went a couple miles before turning into a dirt road, so I turned around. About halfway back I came upon a rattlesnake writhing in the middle of the road. Its head and rattle were lying a couple feet from the body. There was no other traffic on the road, so I must have hit it, but never saw it until returning.

Not a bad idea! With all the road-kill rattlers I see here in the summer. A rattlesnake belt isn't my style, but a rattle key fob would be cool.

With my waist, it would take an awfully big rattler to make a belt that would fit.

[attachment=0:1v9pzcff]Untitled-1.jpg[/attachment:1v9pzcff]Anyone remember Rattlesnake Annie, the country singer, a few years back? She had an earring made from a rattle.

There is a little town here in west Texas that has its annual rattlesnake days, where you can get a taste of cooked rattlesnake. I never tried it.

A couple of years ago while driving in the dark on the tree lined road leading into the development where we live. I ran over an alligator in the middle of the road. He was at least 8-10" long and I never saw him in the dark 'till just before I went over him. Luckily we were in my wife's car at the time, a VW Golf, not on my bike.

It's not quite a snake but anyone want the rabbit that took me out a few weeks ago. Darted out in front of me at the last second and I think he either hit my front tire or my left foot, either way I ended up sliding across the pavement. Thank God for a thick leather jacket and a full helmet.

Worst part is, I never saw any trace of him. My luck it was all in my head and he never touched me. HA!

You have to pay attention a little bit more, then you won't miss important things like that. :poke2: :poke2: :)

Rule # 67. If it is small enough to eat in one meal hit it. Don't try to miss it and go down.

Well it was my first "encounter" with the little furry bastards. I may have freaked out a little.

My 1st real encounter and thankfully a near miss was with a MOOSE. SOB those things are tall.

headbutted a duck once when driving - flew straight into the side of my head and scared the $h*t out of me - think it was a bit worse for wear after though

I don't know. I never found a trace of the rabbit I hit. I'm sure while I was bleeding through my glove he was sitting on the side of the road laughing his little bunny backside off.

I had to upgrade my exhaust because of all the close encounters I was having. On a single morning I had 3 rabbits dart in front of me, 4 deer run across the road, a opossum run with me for about 20 feet and a pheasant just stand in the middle of the road and look at me. I feel like I'm Snow White!

Anyone have any tips for keeping these and other road critters away. I've heard an old superstition about placing a bell under your bike.

That's why it's there. I am impressed with the extra effort to find the picture, unless of course that picture was already saved on your computer.

The little bell is for road gremlins. A Stebel air horn will help move some of the critters but a lower speed and keeping a close watch will be the best solution. You should scan left and right at all times when you are riding.

I took out a deer a little over a year ago on my way to work. Rode the bike fom the impact zone to the hospital about 9 miles with a broken left ankle. Nurse laughed as I was hopping across the parking lot to get to the er door. Never dropped the bike, thanking the man upstairs for that one. People at work keep asking me why I still ride since the accident, all I can tell them is " you've neve ridin before have you."

Re: Hit my first 'animal' a few days ago.

Everyone I talk to who has rode a bike before has dropped it or hit something. It's just a part of riding. All you an do is wear the proper equipment, say a little prayer and enjoy the ride.

Course they also call me rabbit now but I should expect that from the smartasses work with.
