How much "play" do you have when your seat is locked?

I purchased a used 2001 gz. When the seat is locked, it can still jiggle around just a bit... more like up & down in the front. Not so much side to side. Is that normal? How can I double check ? If I pull the latch cable, how much of the "clip" should slip under the lever?
