My guess is that once it is hard and cooked on, no solvent will help much; if it don't soften it in a few minutes, I doubt that overnight will be any better. Certainly wouldn't hurt to try though. WD40 should be about as good as anything.

As for the steel wool.........I don't know how Alan was trying to use it but 0000 is about as damaging to good chrome as a cotton ball is to your face......unless you push really, REALLY hard. A spritz of WD and a gentle wipe with 0000 might be all you need IF it is a really thin coating. If it's thick, back to the stick.
