Re: Setting Idle Speed (and backfiring)

Thanks for the info guys. I've tightened them to the specified torque (10 ft-lb) and the backfiring seems to have stop. There's still a puttering, but it seems to be performing ok.

The bolts are...

Hi guys, been awhile since I've been on here.

Is there a specific style of tachometer that I need to check the idle speed and how do I hook it up to check?

What does the manual mean by the...

Re: 1999 GZ250

Yep, I got the support brackets. Pain in the butt installing them (tip: i found it much easier using a second socket wrench to hold the bolts). I'll keep an eye out for the heat, but so far it...

Sorry if the pics are too large. I just recently got some saddlebags and wanted to show them off!
The bags are from a Canadian company, Talisman Motorcycle Luggage. I got the large,...

Re: Valve Clearance.

I've got the valve adjuster screw, the feeler guages, and an offset 8mm wrench that I picked up at Sears for about $7. Now I just have to find the time!

Re: Carb cleaner issue?

VT, i did the exact same thing but was too embarrassed to post it. haha.. I'm glad you did. I had to dump out the tank (poured it into my car) then put regular gas in. It cleared up after a bit and...

Re: Canadian Motorcycle Newbie

Don't worry about that! I've always believed the best way to get answers is to ask questions. :2tup: So you'll all get to know me as I plan on asking about 1000 more questions over the next little...

Re: Canadian Motorcycle Newbie

I do that. Perhaps I'm downshifting too early then?

Re: Black plug, black smoke

It's definitely a backfire; doesn't happen every time though.

I asked the dealership for a carb kit last week and they said they don't sell them, only individual parts. I thought that was strange....

Re: Canadian Motorcycle Newbie

Well, just hit my first 150 km! (100 mi give or take.) I'm starting to get more confidence and am venturing out into slightly heavier traffic. Not going to do too much yet though as I don't have my...

He're's the latest update:
Ran some carb cleaner through the gas tank and it's running fairly decent but it's still backfiring on occasion (only when shutting it off though.) I make sure it returns...

Re: New (to me) 2002 GZ - thoughts?

I just ordered a valve adjuster from my local dealership. I was only $9 or so (probabl $7US). Basically it has a square end on it. One of the techs said he's done it with needlenose pliers before,...

Thanks all, especially Easy. You've been very patient with a motorcycle newbie. :)

Re: Black plug, black smoke

Ok, some good, some bad.

I took the choke cable apart and successfully lubed it with WD40 using the cable luber I got. Success! It worked well. I can actually move the lever without straining. So,...

Re: Black plug, black smoke

Will do WW. I actually bought a new one anyway (air filter that is.) So I'll just change it out. Seeing as the bike is 10 years old and I don't have any service records, I figured I'll just change it...
